We produced the live streaming of a concert of songs by Kabaret Starszych Panów — a legendary Polish song-and-cabaret ensemble — performed by students and teachers of the Krzysztof Komeda Music School of Popular Music and Jazz, at the ArtBem Cultural Centre in Warsaw. Three Sony XDCAM cameras in Full HD, produced on a flypack system with a backup internet line.

A cultural institution's concert shown the television way
Live streaming a concert at a cultural centre is not "one camera at the back of the hall". The online viewer expects television quality: a wide shot of the whole stage, close-ups of the vocalists and musicians, shots of the audience and good sound — so that the broadcast captures the atmosphere of the live event.
The challenge was to cover the entire hall with cameras, move smoothly between the wide shot and close-ups, and guarantee a reliable broadcast — which is why we secured a backup internet line.

Three Sony XDCAM cameras, a flypack and a backup line
We produced the material with three Sony XDCAM cameras in Full HD. Two cameras were set up as stationary units — one covered the wide shot, the other handled close-ups. The third camera was mobile: it showed the audience in the hall, the concert participants from different angles and the musicians playing their instruments. This let us cover the entire hall and keep full control over what the vision mixer wanted to show.
We recorded the sound with a Zoom H2 digital recorder connected directly to the sound engineers' mixing console, while Rode NTG2 microphones picked up the ambient sound (applause, the atmosphere of the hall). We edited and colour-graded the shortened version in Final Cut Studio PRO 7 on Apple Mac Pro workstations.

How do you ensure sound quality during a concert?
We take the sound directly from the sound engineer's mixing console and blend it with ambient sound from microphones (applause, the atmosphere of the hall). This makes the broadcast sound full and natural, rather than like a recording from a single microphone in the audience.
Is the broadcast protected against interruption?
Yes. For this concert we used a backup internet line so that the live broadcast was secured. On larger productions we use redundant lines and backup systems so that the transmission runs smoothly from start to finish.
Do you prepare edited material after the concert?
Yes. After this concert we prepared an edited and colour-graded shortened version of the material. Besides the live broadcast, we can deliver a recording of the whole event and edited versions for publication on YouTube or other channels.
